PCN Team

Joanne Berry (f)
Clinical Pharmacist

The clinical pharmacists are here to support you with all your medication-related queries. You can book an appointment with them for a medication review, which is often referred to as a ‘Structured Medication Review’. This thorough review allows the clinical pharmacist to review your medicines in line with national/local guidance, recent blood tests and other investigations.

The medication reviews can also overlap with long term conditions and therefore the clinical pharmacists also support the East Warwickshire PCN practices in chronic disease management. They use their knowledge and expertise to help you make the best use of your medicines, keeping your ideas, concerns and expectations at the center of every consultation, resulting in a holistic review.

They gain great satisfaction from applying their skills and are looking forward to meeting you soon in one of their consultations.

The Link Worker will help put you in touch with people or activities that might help you feel better.

They could introduce you to a new community group or a local club. Maybe they will help you find legal advice or help with debt. It could just be a matter of finding you some information on local resources. Or help with completing a form.

Whatever it may be, Social Prescribing can help you have to have more control over your own health and find ways to improve how you feel in a way that suits you.

If this is something you think would benefit you, speak to your GP or a member of the Practice Team and they can refer you into one of our Link Workers.

Training practice

General Practice Registrars

Southam Surgery is an accredited Training Practice involved in the training of fully qualified doctors who are coming to the end of their General Practice training.

We have registrars who work with us in the practice for 6-12 month periods of time and who are carrying out their training with the Coventry and Warwickshire GP Vocational Training Scheme.

We have been a training practice for many years now and the feedback from patients regarding our registrars has been very positive with registrars becoming an important part of the team. They provide patients with a greater diversity of clinicians and bring fresh ideas and approaches that are beneficial to established doctors and patients. When you are seeing a GP Registrar, you can expect to receive the quality of service you would get from your own GP.

Registrar doctors will have their own surgeries and it will be clearly signposted in the waiting room and on the Doctor’s door that they are GP Registrars. On occasions they will also sit in on a clinic run by a fully qualified General Practitioner. Prior to entering the consulting room your will be told if they are present.

Occasionally, GP Registrars carry out video recordings of their consultations for training purposes. You will be warned in advance when this is happening and they will only proceed with your written consent. Intimate examinations will not be recorded and the camera can be switched off at any time. All recordings are strictly confidential and will only be viewed by the Registrar and their GP Trainer, who is one of the GPs based at the Surgery. If you feel uncomfortable with having your consultation recorded then you have the opportunity to decline if you prefer.

Nursing Students

From time to time we also have nursing students may be present during your consultation. If you do not wish for these students to be present then please let us know.

GP net earnings

All GP practices are required by NHS England to declare the mean net earnings (average pay) for GPs working to deliver NHS services to patients at each practice.

The average pay for GPs working at Southam Surgery in the financial year 2019/2020 was £63,998 before tax and national insurance. At this time, there were six doctors who had worked in the Practice for more than six months.

It should be noted that the prescribed method for calculating earnings is potentially misleading because it takes no account of how much time doctors spend working in the practice, and should not be used to form any judgement about GP earnings, nor to make any comparison with any other practice.
